Modern Rockville Road
A Letter from the President of RHGNA
The Modern Rockville Road project which states its aim to expand the road from four to six lanes to decrease congestion and prevent rear-in crashes and improve safety is a mistruth. RHGNA residents and businesses oppose this expansion project. This road project from High School Rd. to Raceway Rd will have negative impacts on our community. The expansion of 4 travel lanes to 6 travel lanes also includes:
1. center concrete medium that will limit left turns onto side streets,
2. eliminate the curb/breakdown lane,
3. eliminate all left turns out of our driveways,
4. eliminate all left turns out of our side streets, and
5. create a ten foot asphalt bike path in our front yards. None of these things belong in a residential neighborhood.
This design is not responsible nor an improvement by INDOT and compromises our quality of life and our safety. Motorists will use the side streets more than ever before and the intersections at stoplights will become major activity for U-Turns because of the center-medium divider. Motorists will be forever taking right turns, circling the neighborhood to reach a home or a business on the other side. Fire rescue and medical emergencies will also have to make U-Turns at the stoplights or circle the neighborhood to reach their destinations. Will the length of our fire trucks really be able to navigate the U-Turn? And how much time will be lost? A center medium interferes with a quick fire rescue or a medical emergency rescue. This residential area will be like living by an interstate. INDOT wants quick unimpeded traffic and has no regard for the 1000’s of people living along Rockville Rd and on our side streets. Please join in opposing the Modern Rockville Road Project.
Thank you.
In service,
Karen Farmer, President, RHGNA

Petition Against Rockville Road Expansion

Voicing Our Opposition
The RHGNA has voiced concerns and objections to the proposed Rockville Road expansion. Crucial issues include: limited access due to the center median, rising danger from turn lane elimination, exacerbated neighborhood traffic and road stress, increased safety risks, and jeopardized property values. Analyzing these potential outcomes underscores the importance of safeguarding the community’s well-being.
Please join us in communicating to Governor Eric Holcomb your opposition to the Modern Rockville Rd project from High School Road to Raceway Road. Suggestions below may be included in your letter
Access Restricted by Center Median
The addition of a center median will limit access to businesses and neighborhoods, resulting in increased congestion on residential side streets.
Danger Rises with Turn Lane Elimination
The removal of turn lanes will increase the risk for residents, customers, and delivery trucks when entering and exiting driveways and commercial properties.
Neighborhood Traffic and Road Stress Intensify
The expansion will not only amplify traffic on neighborhood streets, disrupting the peaceful environment, but also stress road conditions due to the city’s limited budget for improvement.
Property Values Under Threat
The expanded highway and the subsequent increase in traffic may cause property values to decline, affecting the financial well-being of homeowners and businesses within the community.
The Modern Rockville Road Blueprint
When is the construction expected to begin and end?
The Modern Rockville Road expansion project, proposed by the Department of Transportation (INDOT), aims to expand Rockville Road from four to six lanes. The plan includes enhancing roads, bridges, and storm drains along nearly three miles of U.S. 36 between I-465 and Raceway Road in Marion County. The primary objectives are to address traffic congestion, crash conflict points, poor drainage, and lack of sidewalks for pedestrians.
How can I voice my concerns about the project?
You can voice your concerns by signing the petition against the Rockville Road expansion, urging INDOT to explore alternative solutions for improving infrastructure without jeopardizing the safety and quality of life in the neighborhood.
How can I stay informed about the project's progress?
